I visited the Ecobuild show on 2 March. It was good to talk to the exhibitors about their products and see them in real life. As a garden designer, there were some areas that were more appropriate to me than others of course, and something that caught my attention was buildings from straw bales. In the right location, these are great!
You put straw bales onto firm ground and fix them in position by driving wooden stakes through the bales, then cover each side of the bale with a lime render. The top of the bale wall needs to be protected from rain with a roof or if it’s an open-roofed structure, tiles or something to shed the rain. They are cheap to build, don’t need foundations, highly insulative for sound and heat, have low carbon emissions, are sustainable and made from renewable sources. What could be better!
