John Cullen Lighting offer CPD masterclasses in garden lighting and a morning spent in the company of Sally Storey and her team was really inspiring. She speaks with great knowledge and passion and I am keen pass this on, creating magical garden lighting for every garden!
Many garden rooms have large windows looking out onto the garden and by using a daylight sensor with a manual over-ride and 1watt LED lighting, you can be energy efficient and bring a garden to life after dark. In the summer months, lighting can extend your evenings and create a garden with a totally different atmosphere. In the dark, navy-coloured months of winter, you can using refreshing light to great advantage and enjoy views of the garden while being snug and warm indoors.
My 10 top tips from this lighting masterclass:
1. use lighting to create an extension of the interior space
2. lighting is all about layers; use combinations of light sources and punctuate for drama
3. use a wash of light to balance brighter lights
4. have several options within one scheme to create different effects
5. think of all viewing angles and take care to reduce glare
6. create a scenario, with additional mini-scenes that can be turned on or off
7. design pergolas etc. to incorporate lights within the fabrication to create hidden light sources
8. light ‘within’ a space, eg lighting the interior of a gazebo will create a silhouette
9. use reflections in pools to add another dimension
10. display items like pots, trees, statues and furniture, and light them as you would features within a house
